Elections Field Coordinator (contract position)

We are a new grassroots alliance of base-building community organizations in San Francisco who have come together to build the political power of poor and working class people of color in San Francisco.  We are based in San Francisco’s working class communities of color: Causa Justa :: Just Cause (CJJC), Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, Filipino Community Center (FCC), Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA), People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights (PODER), South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), and SF Day Labor Program/La Colectiva de Mujeres.

We are each building power in our neighborhoods but seek to seize, and build upon, our collective electoral experience. We share a long-term vision for racial and economic justice, and a commitment to run sophisticated operations during annual election cycles to produce real victories. We see electoral organizing as a strategy that should complement and be organically integrated with, our movement-building strategies.

POSITION SUMMARY

In 2010, the Alliance is working in partnership with Mobilize the Immigrant Vote, a statewide collaborative of community-based organizations building their capacity to educate and mobilize their constituents for electoral participation.  The Alliance and MIV seek to hire an Elections Field Coordinator to support the development and implementation of our collective civic participation activities in 2010.  The ideal candidate will have working knowledge and experience with direct organizing and a commitment to social justice and equity for low-income communities of color.  This position will be housed and supervised by a staff at a member organization, but will work closely with all member organizations.  This position is for 10 weeks (September 7 to November 16) with a focus on a 6-week field program.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Work closely with key staff of member organizations to develop the goals and strategies of a civic participation plan;

2.     Coordinate & track field operations; including preparing lists and scripts, creating maps, ensuring that data is updated daily, and supporting member organizations to set up and run phone banks, canvasses, and mobilizations;

3.     Coordinate the development and printing of multilingual elections literatures;

4.     Lead Alliance’s volunteer program including tracking, recruitment, training, and supervision and support member organizations with their volunteer programs;

5.     Coordinate the hiring of paid canvas teams, train and supervise an Alliance paid team, and support member organizations in the coordination of their paid teams;

6.     Gather and compile reporting and share results weekly to member organizations;

7.     Coordinate with other support staff including MIV & PILA and ensure that MIV responsibilities are met;

8.     Work directly with the Alliance Coordinating team.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

1.     Commitment to social, racial, economic, environmental, and gender justice;

2.     Experience working in low-income communities of color;

3.     Two years experience in community organizing, union, and/or elections organizing;

4.     Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills;

5.     Strong motivation and adaptability, including ability to work under pressure and with deadlines;

6.     Must be available to work nights and weekends;

7.     Computer and software skills, including experience in utilizing and troubleshooting VAN and other voter engagement tools such as a predictive dialing system;

8.     Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

1.     Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, or Tagalog;

2.     People of color, women, LGBTQ, and natives of San Francisco strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation:  This is a contract position.  Compensation is $12,000 for 10 weeks from September 7 to November 16.
